Fantastic Surgeon and Incredible Bedside Manor
This is by far the best doctor i have encountered, and i have seen many. i unfortunately broke my finger and was told by the urgent care facility that i would need surgery. two separate people (one of them a surgeon himself) recommended dr. polatsch. he explained everything to me and i was so prepared for the procedure. i had several metal pins put in which were eventually removed easily in the office. i am 2 months from having had the surgery and am almost as good as new. thank you so much dr. polatsch, abby, lucas, and the rest of the wonderful staff. you saved me.

Thank You
Let me first say that I feel very fortunate to have had Dr. Polatsch as my hand surgeon. I came to him with a finger that could have easily been lost at the knuckle, but with Dr. Polatschâs help, itâs hard to see I had an injury at all. I had a wood working accident that damaged my ring finger. The nerves, ligaments, and arteries were all lacerated and the joint near the tip of my finger was shattered. From the beginning, he was very clear about my options and what I could expect. He was also clear about what he wouldnât know until he operated. Thanks to his precise and delicate work I was able to keep my finger by fusing the bone fragments in the tip. Minimal length was lost and the nerves are as good as I could have hoped for. Without Dr. Polatschâs expertise, I feel the outcome would have been much different. His knowledge and demeanor made me feel I was in very capable hands throughout the whole process. I also appreciated the sensitive care I received from his staff, and in particular Lukasz. Iâm extremely grateful to Dr. Polatschâs for helping me get my hand back in working order and I highly recommend him and his team.
Top wrist surgeon
Doctor Polatsch is incredible. From the very beginning, I knew I was with the right doctor. I had seen one other doctor after I broke my wrist and was not happy with this person who was cold and had the worst bedside manor. Doctor Polatsch explained everything to me in a way that I could understand. He gave me a realistic time table. He explained how important it was to begin moving my fingers even before the surgery. Surgery went very even though my wrist was in several pieces. I am only 4 weeks from surgery but am in a removable brace and getting physical therapy. I am so pleased with my result. Thank you so much Doctor Polatch and your whole team. You truly are a gifted surgeon.
Simply brillian
Great doctor that got to the point quickly with a prompt date for surgery after diagnosis without seeming rushed and uncaring. As a guitarist my hand is pretty important; i am happy to report that after a fairly short period of rehab I’m back to 100% capability with no visible scars from the K pins. In the interests of being balanced, I did wait a little while in the diagnosis room on my own but that is not surprising when you have such a talented surgeon treating so many clients. Well worth the wait (and we’re not even talking that long)! Wholeheartedly recommended.
Elbow debridement procedure worked great
Dr. Polatsch performed an elbow debridement on me to alleviate my tennis elbow after three cortisone shots and multiple rounds of physical therapy didn’t help. I was in a cast for 9 days, then a brace for 2 weeks. I had 4 visits with a physical therapists, plus exercises at home. Two months later, I am done with physical therapy and am just doing exercises at home. I am 90% pain free, much better than before the procedure, and expect to be 100% pain free within a month. I highly recommend Dr. Polatsch for this procedure if your tennis elbow isn’t responding to conservative treatment.
Here in NYC we are blessed with some of the best doctors and surgeons in the world. Dr Polatsch is one of those surgeons!I went to Dr Polatsch with a trigger finger on my right ring finger. He performed the surgery without a hitch.I thought I would be out of commission for months. He told me to keep moving my fingers after the surgery. I believe this did the trick. I was back playing golf 2 weeks after the stiches came out.I just went back to have my left hand done and two days after surgery, my hand is doing great. Keep moving your fingers.I am sure I will be back playing golf in no time, the only problem is I no longer have an excuse for a bad round. After 3yrs of suffering with this problem, thanks to Dr Polatsch I will be pain free!!!!!!!!!!
extra finger of a baby
My son was born having one extra finger next to the little finger on both hands. Soon after that we began searching for a hand surgeon capable of performing surgery on such a little baby. It was a real problem, since most of doctors we found did not have solid experience in children’s hand surgery, and six months later we were still seeking. Finally, a friend recommended Dr.Daniel Polatsch at Beth Israel Medical Center, as a hand surgeon, having wide experience in children’s surgery. On our first visit, Dr. Polatsch asked us to put off the surgery until our son would be at least 18 month old. Such advice seemed reasonable, since by that age a child’s body becomes more resistant to possible negative impacts of general anesthesia. The operation was eventually performed in February 2012, when our son was of one year 9 months. Long as well as just before the event we discussed even all the smallest details with the doctor. Getting comprehensive answers to all our questions gave us peace of mind while the operation was going on. But I couldn’t have guessed at the unsurpassed skill of Dr. Polatsch and his team when my son came out from the operating room three hours after the operation was complete. Though he was accompanied by my wife, he was stepping out briskly without any help, absolutely not staggering (excellent job of the anesthesiologist as well. Many thanks)!!! He was in good spirit, not crying and very hungry :). The first thing he did was to gobble up all food we brought from home. The only thing obviously surprising him was both his hands covered with plaster casts. We easily transferred him back home where he again ate and went to sleep for the whole night without any problems. Although Dr. Polatsch prescribed a special medicine to relieve possible pain, we never used that, because our son never complained!!! This was my second great surprise at the doctor’s expertise! The only one really bad moment for our son was when he woke up next morning and realized both his hands are still fixed firmly! In the beginning he became very upset and was weeping. But a couple hours later he coped with the problem, having the tips of all fingers sticking out the casts. Both casts were placed so professionally that they still allowed him to play with most of his toys even taking such small things as sunflower seed. He wore them for three weeks, even while attending the daycare. When the casts were removed, we saw the area was rather swollen and reddish, but everything looked very accurate and clean, giving us great satisfaction. Yet more proof of Dr. Polatsch’s excellent skills. So, now, after three and a half months, both hands look absolutely perfect. Swelling has passed, no more redness, stitches almost disappeared. There are only small pink scars, reminding us of the story. Summing up, we would like to say that Dr. Polatshch really performed the operation very well, at the highest professional level. Our son absolutely did not have any complications, even though we anticipated some, especially, as a result of general anesthesia. We sincerely want to recommend Dr. Polatsch to all parents, having kids with similar problems and still not daring to do the operation
I have thumb basal joint arthritis. I had been under the care of another orthopedist specializing in the hand who gave me shots and told me I could have as many as I needed for life. This didn’t sit well with me and I was recommended to Dr. Polatsch who said 3 shots a year was my limit. He recommended basal joint arthroplasty. I had this procedure done the end of February and am pain free and have full mobility. I have been told my recovery was faster than most but I want to share with everyone that this procedure works and that Dr. Polatsch is an excellent and caring doctor to deal with. He was accessible to talk to when I needed to and he answered all my questions and concerns. He warned me that I was going to be in much pain; thankfully this didn’t last too long in my case. I am very grateful to Dr. Polatsch for giving me back the use of my thumb and eliminating the pain associated with my condition.
Saved my fingers! Double-Thenar Flap Hand Surgery
In December 2011 I caught my right fingers in a door and was originally told I would need 2 fingers amputated due to lost tissue and bone-exposed. (and I am a righty). Upon a second opinion I saw Dr. Polatsch and he was able to save my fingers with a Double-Thenar Flap Surgery. 4 Months later, the average person cannot even tell I had surgery. Although I still have extreme sensitivity, I have feeling in all fingers, full nails intact and a working right hand. I could not be happier with the results and would recommend Dr. Polatsch to everyone. He was extremely caring, professional and a fantastic surgeon.
Awesome hand surgeon, very calm which is great quatlity because it keeps you relaxed. I was nervous about my wrist surgery but after meeting with him , was very at ease. Great bedside manner, felt extremely comfortable and would recommend him to anyone with any hand/wrist issues for sure.-LDR
After being misdiagnosed by a doctor with a cold bedside manner Dr. Polatsch was recommended to me by a friend. After seeing him the first time I knew I made the right choice in a doctor. He diagnosed the problem immed, carpal tunnel and suggested alternatives and surgery was the last resort,so I felt it was not being pushed on me. I did have to have the surgery on both hands and the care was excellent. He is patient, supportative and has a wonderful bedside manner.I can say the same for the PA’s that work there as well. They all know their stuff. It was a much better experience then I had in the past and all I can say is thank you.
Dr Polatsch assisted me in hand surgery to remove a cyst. I was a little apprehensive going into day surgery and having procedure performed as I had a then 5 month old baby at home to take care of. My whole experience with Dr Polatsch and his staff – especially his hospital staff was amazing and my hand surgery was first class. Beth Israel was amazing also. Not only is Dr Polatsch very skilled, he has a terrific bedside manner and my husband and I were very impressed when he called him to advise on how the surgery went and when I’d be available to be collected. Would recommend him in a heartbeat!
Top Hand Doc
I recommend this surgeon without any reservation. I had hand numbness and weakness in my forearm and outside 2 fingers for years. I had seen several other doctors and no one was able to diagnose my problem despite having undergone many painful tests. Dr. Polatsch examined me and made the correct diagnosis right away (cubittal tunnel syndrome). I tried a few splints and changing the way I sleep but that didnt help and he offered me surgery which i gladly accepted. Surgery was quick and simple. I am 2 weeks after surgery and I feel great. The numbness is all gone and my strength has returned. He is great. I also knew I was with the top doctor in his field when I saw him treating Kanye West!!!!
I do really recommend this doctor
He had my son’s surgery when he was 31 months old. His good attitude for young children is really impressive- he must be a good daddy. He examined my son’s finger with a simple playing and touching. He gave me enough information to decide the surgery and scheduled us a perfect time for a little one – the full body anesthesia. The surgery was short and the stitches were all clean.
Cured my thumb arthritis
This is by far the best doctor i have encountered, and i have seen many. I unfortunately broke my finger and was told by the urgent care facility that i would need surgery. Dr. Daniel Polatsch is a very very very GOOD doctor who, is very knowledgeable, kind and attentive. I had a bad accident while visiting New york and was referred to him by a friend of mine. He took time off his busy schedule as his appointments are full. He was very kind and assisted me and even did my surgery within one week. I am very thankful for having him as my doctor who gave me lots of confidence (i was very scared the way my hand was fractured and i never imagined that I would be able to use my right hand again especially being a right handed.I would recommend Dr. Polatsch strongly to everyone and anyone. His staff are very nice and courteous. They helped me alot. Thank you Dr. Polatsch for all the help you have done and doing for me, you are THE BEST!!Best RegardsMeena PillaiSingapore
One of the Best
Dr. Polatsch performed reconstructive surgery on my right (dominant) hand after a fall. I was able to make an appointment with him quickly and a speedy diagnosis was helped by a professional and caring staff in his office. Likewise, his team on the day of surgery at Beth Israel was professional in every way. They kept me informed of what would happen–from putting on the hospital gown to post-surgery recovery. The psychological benefits of this kind of superior care have been just as important in my speedy recovery as the skilled surgery itself. Dr. Polatsch clearly cares about his patients and takes the time to explain his diagnosis in informative, down-to-earth terms. While I hope I won’t have to have hand surgery again, I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone in need of care.
Passionate and enthusiastic expert in the field with the right attitude!
Dr. Polatsch is simply the most patient, experienced, passionate physician I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. It all started with a 99% slice of one of my middle finger’s zone 2 flexor tendon and lateral nerve bundle while cooking one evening. Even though the ER doctor who stitched my wound advised me to return to the local hospital for a hand surgery consultation, a friend suggested I try a specialist. I found Dr. Polatsch via Dr. Malone’s listing in NY Mag’s “Best Doctors” issue, and since then, it has been a truly positive, hopeful experience. From the first phone conversation with the office admin to surgery and rehab kickoff to today’s 10 week visit, I could not be more pleased with both my progress (90% range/function, minimal scarring, and NO PAIN) and simply the positive impression that lingers after my interactions with Dr. Polatsch, his aides, everyone in his administrative staff, and the entire occupational therapist staff he recommended. His reputation is stellar. Local physical therapists (and their mothers– yes, I had a random conversation on a Manhattan bus when a PT’s mother noticed my now-retired splint) know of him, and when I showed them the sutures or more recently the subtle scar, they confirmed what I suspected early in my experience with remarks like “beautiful work” and “he really IS one of the top hand surgeons in the region…”Dr. Polatsch has been very patient during our sessions, and you can hear just how passionate he is about the realm of hand physiology and its intricacies. In addition to taking the time to educate his patients he will often pull his peers and aides into a consult to demonstrate or share his observations with them– with a fervor lacking in other physicians, who may have become jaded or more disturbingly self-absorbed with experience. That was one of the key characteristics that I noticed about Dr. Polatsch early on– his attitude toward his patients. He is not only enthusiastic about medicine and his field, but more importantly about the real goal of his profession– to sympathetically treat a patient, and provide the advice and means for success in recovery while instilling trust. As I approach then end of my rehab program (only a few more weeks remaining!), I am confident that I will continue recommending anyone with a hand injury in the NYC area– perhaps beyond– to visit Dr. Polatsch– a true professional and authority in the domain.
Excellent Surgeon
Highly recommend this excellent surgeon. He fixed my wrist from a bad golfing injury. I am actually playing better now than before I broke my wrist. go figure. I can’t speak high enough regarding this doc. two thumbs up.
PRP (platelet rich plasma) Fixed my elbow
I was referred to this doctor by my internist and local orthopaedist who both told me he was one of the top hand surgeons in the city. I have had elbow pain for more than 2 years and have tried many months of physical therapy which did not work. My local orthopaedist had given me several steroid injections also which helped only temporarily along with different braces/straps. I was reluctant to have surgery to fix my elbow and even tried acupuncture which did not work either. Dr. Polatsch met with me and discussed my problem at length. In short, he basically told me that I had two options remaining which included surgery to “clean out” the damaged tendon or a PRP injection (platelet rich plasma injection). I had read in the paper about this new method to treat chronic tendonitis and I was very interested in trying it. I had read how it has helped many pro athletes return to their sport after sustaining injuries at a quicker rate. He informed me that there was little risk involved with a PRP injection and surgery could always be done if it did not work. I am thrilled to say that it is about 7 weeks after a single PRP injection and I am almost 100 percent pain free. The injection hurt a little more than the previous steroid injection but I started improving a week or 2 later. I am so thankful that I was referred to this outstanding and conservative surgeon. He really is a miracle worker.
Superb Hand Surgeon
I had a very favorable interaction with this doctor. He quickly diagnosed my problem. He offered me a conservative approach to treat it (no surgery). I was told by several people (including another surgeon) that I would require surgery. It has been over 4 months and I am doing very well. I feel much better and am so pleased with my progess. Dr. Polatsch is very professional and I completely trust him.
Dr. P is the best
Dr. Polatch is the best. I saw 3 other hand doctors in new york city and they were not able to diagnose my problem. Dr. P figured it out right away and took care of the problem. I have been pain free ever since.

I had a complex injury that was initially mistreated by another hand doctor. no other surgeon would touch me. dr. polatch re-operated on me and straightened out my wrist. I am perfect now and am so happy that he was recommended to me. while i was in his office, he was treating a professional athlete also!!!!!!. I am so lucky to have found him. he is the best.
Great doctor for nerve problems
I was referred to Dr. Polatsch by my internist for carpal tunnel syndrome. Dr. Polatsch and his staff are wonderful. I had my surgery 5 days ago and I am already better. I have no more numbness and am finally able to sleep through the night. I am even typing this email without a problem. I strongly recommend this surgeon for carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve problems
Incredible hand surgeon. I broke my elbow and he fixed me. I feel great and am back playing hockey. I highly recommend this skilled surgeon and excellent physician.
Best hand surgeon ever!!!!!!!!
Dr. Daniel Polatsch is the best doctor I’ve been to in 25 years of America. He is kind, polite, sweet and a brilliant surgeon. I had carpal tunnel syndrome and was operated by Dr. Polatsch. The surgery was a success and the staff at Beth Israel on 14th street was wonderful!!!! I didn’t want to go home after my surgery because I felt that I was on a spa treatment. They pamper me and I love it!!!!! Phillip Johnson ambulatory rocks!!!!!! Thank you all for everything: Jo Marie Di Batista ( director of peri-operative services), Dr. Donald kastenbaum( CEO peri-operative services),Ann Romano- or-rn, Bernadette Difuntorum pacu-Rn, Deborah Cicala or/pacu Rn, Pa Peter Peron and Dr. Greenberg (anesthesiologist). Hope I didn’t leave anyone out. You are awesome!!!!!!! Thank you all for everything. truly, Claudia Zangrillo
The best hand surgeon ever
My son broke his scaphoid bone and was treated by a local hand surgeon. when it did not heal correctly he wanted to take bone from his hip and place it in his wrist. i was in shock. i was referred to dr polatsch by my medical doctor (whom dr polatsch had operated on already). Even though I had to fly across the country to see him I was so pleased. he explained everything to my family and I and he told me that we did not need to use bone from his hip. He underwent this complex surgery and the bone healed in 6 weeks. he is now snowboarding again and is perfect. I am so glad I was referred to this exceptional surgeon. He and his staff are amazing. I highly recommend him for any hand or wrist problem. He has an excellent bed side manor and my son just adores him.
One Visit to Dr. Polatsch and My Mystery Was Solved
About 5 years ago, I experienced pain in the nail of my right thumb. I thought I had bumped it or something. Well, instead of getting better, the pain increased. When even the slightest pressure was applied to the half-moon, I saw stars the pain was so severe. I complained to my internist and to my dermatologist but neither could think what it could be. My dermatologist suggested it could be an infection and prescribed antibiotic cream. I used it for a while but since it had no effect, I stopped. The pain was becoming intolerable. It was affecting my ability to use my right (dominant) hand. I was afraid of doing something that would trigger the pain. When I had manicures, I had to make sure they did not push back the cuticle and if I or they forgot, it would hurt so bad I would be brought to tears. Well, finally my doctor referred me to Dr. Polatsch. As soon as I told him my symptoms, he immediately suspected a glomus tumor. These are extremely small tumors that are not detectable except in an MRI. My was definitively diagnosed by MRI and surgically removed by Dr. Polatsch. The surgery was an outpatient procedure with recovery very easy and quick. It is now 4 months later and my thumb nail is very nearly completely grown out and I am COMPLETELY pain-free. I cannot thank Dr. Polatsch enough. I was beginning to think I was going crazy or imagining things. If you are experiencing pain your fingernails and noone can do anything for you, go to Dr. Polatsch and see if you too have a glomus tumor!

Top Hand Surgeon
Dr. Polatsch is the most professional, caring, intelligent surgeon. He spent so much time with me. I had a problem with one of my nerves that no one was able to diagnose. I spent so many wasted doctors visits and expensive tests only to find out that Dr. Polatsch could have diagnosed it with just a good examination. I have been in terrible pain for over 3 years. Dr. Polatsch explained to me the problem and recommended a procedure that takes the pressure of my nerve. I was very nervous to have the procedure and went on the internet to read all about it. I was delighted when I found out that Dr. Polatsch has published about this problem extensively. Needless to say the surgery went perfectly. I am doing fantastic. My nerve problem is completely gone and it has only been 3 weeks since the surgery. This doctor is really amazing. I highly recommend him for any problem involving nerves. His office staff is excellent also. I only wish that more doctors were this good and had such a good bedside manor. He is the best.
Wonderful Surgeon
I was referred to Dr. Polatsch by a close friend who had carpal tunnel surgery by him and could not stop raving about how great a surgeon and person he is. He told me his surgery went exceptionally well and he was completely pain free and had no more numbness after years of suffering. I remember soon after his surgery trying to see his scar and I could not even find it. I broke my wrist from a recent fall and went to see Dr. Polatsch soon after my injury. I was very impressed with him and his entire staff. It was clear from the minute I stepped foot in the hand surgery center that he is THE person to see for wrist injuries. He immediately took x-rays and explained the injury to me and went over my x-rays in detail. He did a detailed examination and explained to me my options and I chose surgery. Surgery was then scheduled a few days later. When I was leaving his office he was treating one of the YANKEES and I knew then that I was in the right place. Surgery went very very well and his entire staff at the hospital were great. About a week later my stitches were taken out and I began therapy. It has only been three weeks but I feel wonderful. I am getting all of my motion back. My scar looks WONDERFUL. At the therapy center I have seen several other patients who have had similar surgery by other doctors and are at different stages of healing. I am so far ahead of these other patients in terms of mobility and strength. I feel so blessed and I thank Dr. Polatsch so much. He really is an incredible surgeon and such a caring human being. I have no doubt that I will be back playing sports in no time. I can not put into words how great a doctor he is and how lucky I was to have found him.
I fell down broke my elbow, NYU’s diagnosis was no fracture/break. Months later the bones had healed but my left arm was shorter than the right, I continued to have pain and limited range of motion. I went to see Dr. Polatsch who took his own x-rays and told me surgery was required. After months of pain pre-surgery I have made a great recovery because of Dr. Polatsch and my elbow/arm is like new. Dr. Polatsch is warm, quick to smile, puts you at ease and is an excellent surgeon. Thanks Doc!
BEST NERVE DOCTOR IN NEW YORK
I suffered from numbness and weakness in my arm and hand for many years. I had seen do many doctors and had been put through sooooooo many different tests, some of them very painful :(. All of my test results were always inconclusive. A work colleague recommended Dr. Polatsch because he had operated on his mother for a broken wrist and was so pleased with her result. From the minute I entered his office I knew I was in the right place. He diagnosed me within 2 minutes as having cubital tunnel syndrome. Apparently he is an expert in this area and has written a lot about this topic. Needless to say my surgery went perfectly smooth and I am doing so well. I can finally feel my fingers again and the strength has returned to my hand. His entire staff was great and his bedside manner is the best. A real down to earth doctor. We need more people like him. Please don’t hesitate to see him for ANY nerve problem.
Great hand surgeon
Excellent hand surgeon – very knowledgeable, approachable, and cares about his patients (as does his staff). I’m a classical musician; Dr. Polatsch operated on my 2 trigger fingers in early May, and because of his expertise and great post-op advice, I’m back to playing several weeks later! Highly recommended.
Dr. Polatsch is great. He operated on my carpal tunnel surgery and I no longer have any of my symptoms. I am able to sleep through the night and am doing so well. Surgery only took 5 MINUTES. To think that I waited so long to have this done because I was so scared. The surgery and recovery is so simple. I highly recommend this world class surgeon.
Best Wrist Doctor in Country
I broke my wrist and was referred to Dr. Polatsch by my internist who told me he was the best Hand Surgeon in the City. Now I know why. Not only is he professional, caring, and has exceptional surgical skills, but he has a great bedside manor. My wrist is doing wonderful. I feel like i never had a problem before. He is the best.
Great Surgeon
Outstanding hand surgeon. I broke my hand and was referred to Dr. Polatsch by several people including my agent. The surgery went perfectly and I am back doing everything. He really is a terrific doctor with a great bed side manor. He explained things to me perfectly. I gladly give him my celebrity endorsement. I highly recommend this doc.
New Yorks Best Doctor
I went to see this doctor because he was listed in New York Magazine’s Best Doctors. I was not let down. He is an excellent doctor and a terrific surgeon. I had a severe nerve injury and he was able to fix me. I had been suffering for so long and had tried everything to avoid surgery. He explained everything to me before hand so I knew exactly what to expect. It has been only a few weeks and I am doing so well. I am able to type this message without my hands finally going numb. He really is terrific and so is his staff at the hand surgery center.
We Need More Stars To Rate Dr. Polatsch
I have not met another Doctor like Dr. Polatsch. There aren’t enough stars to rate him. He is young/friendly and has the wisdom of the old country doctors you only see on TV. He’s the best I’ve met.
Recent Hand Surgery
I recently had surgery with Dr. Polatsch at Beth Israel Hospital. First, the experience with Dr. Polatsch was great. The office staff was pleasant and each time I arrived early for my appointment, they brought me back early. I did not wait more than an average of 5 minutes for my appointment. Dr. Polatsch was extremely professional, comforting, and clearly knowledgeable. He also took his time with me and followed up with me post-appointment via his cell phone. Due to the nature of the injury, he remained in contact with me while I was going through follow-up procedures, e.g. MRI. As for Beth Israel hospital (were I had surgery), it was a great experience and pleasant surprise. Everyone that I interacted with me was nice and had a positive attitude. In the post-surgery floor, I had a “concierge” come around to see if I needed anything (she also followed-up with a phone call when I went home to check-in on me). I was offered a massage. I was offered and accepted Accupunture. They made the post-surgery experience a good experience given the pain I was in. I highly recommend Dr. Polatsch.
The Best Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgeon in the Country!!!!!
Dr. Polatsch is wonderfull. I had SEVERE carpal tunnel syndrome for many years. I was reluctant to have it fixed as I had my other side done about 7 years ago by another “surgeon” and it took a very long time to recover and I had a large scar. I was referred to Dr. Polatsch by several different people (he had treated a work collegue and a long time friend had they both were very happy). The entire experience was unbelievable. The staff at the hand surgery center were prompt and very professional. Dr. Polatsch was amazing. He explained to me the problem in detail (even though I had been through it in the past). He went step by step on what to expect during and after surgery. Surgery took ONLY 6 minutes and I was awake the entire time. It has only been 2 weeks but I feel fantastic. My scar is barely visable and my numbness and buring have already disappeared. This was such a completely different experience from my last surgeon. The hospital experienec was fantastic aswell. The nurses, the anesthesiologists, and the entire staff was great also. I can’t believe how easy it all was.
Superb Hand Surgeon

I was told by several people (including another surgeon) that I would require surgery. It has been over 4 months and I am doing very well. I feel much better and am so pleased with my progess. As a motorcyclist .. Things happen I broke my scaphoid( at the proximal pole) and I was sent to dr polatsch. I had never had surgery before , but he made sure I was completely comfortable with what was going to happen during the surgery and all hi staff was amazing . I had surgery on my wrist 1 week after our 1 st meeting and it took about 30 mn and when I woke up I was fixed .in pain but that’s normal. After that a few follow up visits and 10 weeks in a cast .. Some physical therapy and my hand works again. He did a final check up to make sure the screw was well placed and I could return to my regular activities slowly. He and all his staff did a perfect job on me and can only recommend him . I m not looking for more fractures but if I ever get one I’ll be going to him first
Dr. Daniel Polatsch IS AMAZING!! I feel so lucky to have found Dr. Polatsch that I have been inspired to write my first online review EVER and I plan to add it to as many review sites as possible. Dr. Polatsch has a very rare combinations of qualities: clinical excellence (he teaches other specialists in his field), charitable (among other things, he is a founding member of the Laurence Polatsch Memorial Fund in memory of his brother who was lost on September 11th), compassionate, funny and not even the least bit nerdy. One must meet Dr. Polatsch to truly understand how fantastic he is but an quick look at his profile online is a helpful in getting to know what he is all about http://www.handsurgeryny.com/physicians-drpolatsch.html . Dr. Polatsch did surgeries on both of my hands and two fingers and the results exceeded my expectations. Both he and his staff were very helpful and patient when it came to answering my many questions and they also were very kind and caring which helped calm my nervousness about having surgeries. Lukasz, his assistant, seems to be everywhere Dr. Polatsch is and is extremely warm and professional. Abbie, his office manager, is extremely efficient and helpful with scheduling appointments. Overall, my experience with Dr. Polatsch and his staff was exceptional and I can not sing their praises enough!
I am a 6 time Professional Heavyweight MMA champion known for knocking people out with my heavy hands. As a professional fighter my hands are my life. Without my hands being healthy I am out of a job and all the hard work and sacrifice over the last 8+ years will have been in vain. This was almost the case when I broke my hand for the second time in my last fight. It was the same bone that broke before, but the break was in a new place due to the previous surgeon leaving a steel plate in my hand. I wanted the plate out but he refused to take it out and assured me that it would be safe to fight with and posed no risk to re-injuring my hand. That ended up not being the case. I shattered my hand in the first solid punch of the fight and ended up with a much more severe injury than I previously had. I needed surgery again so I searched for the best hand surgeon I could find and came across Dr. Daniel B. Polatsch.
Tonight I punched with my hand for the first time since my last fight in May (6 months ago). As I was wrapping my hand I reflected on the last year and a half and three surgeries. It’s been a very long and hard road. This last surgery had many more complications. There was a steel plate in my hand that had to be removed, there was rotational deformity in my finger making it impossible to make a solid fist from the prior surgeon misaligning the bone, and the bone was shattered in three pieces through my knuckle. I did not make it public knowledge, but because of all the complications there was a real chance that my career had come to an end. As I put my glove on I had such a mix of emotions between excitement and anxiety. The last time I started hitting after healing it was extremely painful, I would have constant swelling afterwards, and my hand ached through my entire training camp. This time around not only was there no pain, but there is no swelling and my hand actually feels even better than it did before I started throwing punches. With each punch that hit the bag I became more and more confident, throwing increasingly faster and harder. I was fully confident that I would be back fighting again, but I was not 100% confident that my hand was going to hold up until tonight. Such a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I’m more determined and focused than I’ve ever been. I cannot thank Dr. Polatsch and his staff at The Hand Sugery Center of NY enough for giving me back my hand and my career. There is no doubt in my mind that if I went anywhere else I wouldn’t be able to fight anymore. This roller coaster journey with my hand has only made me realize how truly blessed I am. Now I’m stronger and hungrier than ever to obtain my goals. I have accomplished a lot so far, but you haven’t seen anything yet, I’m just getting started. In the great words of John Paul Jones “I have not yet begun to fight!”.
For better or worse, I’ve gotten to know Dr. Polatsch quite well in the last few years. I was an athlete in college (javelin thrower) and tore my TFCC tendon in my throwing wrist in 2009. The surgery was scheduled to be quite invasive and a number of doctors told me that I’d need a plate and screws to repair it. However, Dr. Polatsch found a less invasive way to do it and successfully performed the surgery without having to use any metal. I made a full recovery and went onto set personal bests the next year, eventually becoming a D1 First Team All-American and competing at the Olympic Trials and on the international stage.
After graduating from college, I had an unfortunate accident in a pick-up soccer game and broke my thumb in a few places. Once again, Dr. Polatsch fixed me up and two months after surgery, I had more motion in the surgically repaired thumb than my healthy thumb. Both of us were in awe because it didn’t quite seem to make sense.
In between these two surgeries, I also had Tommy John surgery on my throwing elbow to repair a torn UCL. Before seeking out an elbow specialist, I sought out Dr. Polatsch for his advice. He had me in his office the next day for an MRI and I eventually underwent surgery with one of the doctors that he referred.
Simply put, Dr. Polatsch is one of the best hand specialists in theTri-state area. As an athlete, it was imperative that I had the best doctors to get me healthy and back to competing at the highest possible level. Dr. Polatsch more than fit the bill in this category. Additionally, he has a great staff and he is very accessible throughout the process (pre/post surgery), which can be tough to come by for doctors of his caliber.
If you find yourself in a situation where you need a hand guy, definitely give Dr. P a call.
Hook of the Hamate surgery. Dr. Polatsch quickly diagnosed and performed hamate hook surgery after I was experiencing a great deal of pain on the golf course. His staff was courteous and professional during the initial appointments and during surgery. The surgery was so successful that I was back on the golf course in 4 weeks lightly swinging a club and back to normal after 6 weeks. I highly recommend Dr. Polatsch for this procedure so you can get back on the course pain free.
My son was born with an extra finger next to the little finger on both hands. A friend recommended Dr. Polatsch, as a hand surgeon, having experience in children’s surgery. The operation was performed in Feb. 2012, when our son was of 21 months. I couldn’t have guessed at the unsurpassed skill of Dr. Polatsch and his team when my son came out from the operating room three hours after the operation. He was stepping out briskly, not staggering (excellent job of the anesthesiologist as well. Many thanks)!!! Both casts were placed so professionally that they allowed him to play with his toys. Now, after three and a half months, both hands look absolutely perfect. We want to say that Dr. Polatshch really performed the operation at the highest professional level. Our son absolutely did not have any complications, even though we anticipated some, especially, as a result of general anesthesia. We recommend him to all parents, having kids with similar problems and not daring to do the operation
AMAZING HAND SURGEON! Dr. Polatsch treated me in December 2011 for a severe hand accident I sustained, where my right hand was caught in a door and the skin was removed on the tips of my fingers- with bone exposed and 0 tissue remaining. ER doctors originally told me I would need 2 fingers amputated- I saw Dr. Polatsch as a 2nd opinion. He was able to save my fingers with a Double Thenar Flap Surgery- and 4 months later the average person cannot even tell I had surgery! I have full feeling in both fingers & full use of my hand, with sensitivity still there of course. He and his staff were absolutely excellent- extremely professional and caring from the office visit to the OR. He is extremely knowledgeable, patient and expresses the uptmost care in his patients. I would recommend him in a heartbeat to everyone– a truly gifted and professional hand surgeon, thank you Dr. Polatsch!
Terrific doctor. I had a serious injury to my wrist which was very unusual (as I was told by 2 other wrist surgeons). Dr. Polatsch explained things to me in a language I understand. He was very understanding of my concerns. Surgery went well and I am rehabbing my wrist now. I have almost all of my strength back already and NO PAIN. I am thrilled. He clearly is an expert wrist surgeon.
I had pain, tenderness and sensitivity to cold in my right middle finger tip for many years. I finally went to see Dr. Polatsch, who was able to diagnose and treat me accurately. He discovered I had a glomus tumor which he removed with minor surgery. I am now pain free!! Dr. Polatsch is not only knowlegable, but also kind and caring. His follow up care post surgery is impeccable. Highly recommended!
I have waited a little over a year to rate Dr. Polatsch after the surgery he performed on my right wrist because I wanted to see how it would hold up. I’m very pleased to report that I haven’t had any problems with my wrist and that if anything it’s stronger now than it was prior to my surgery. I have and will continue to recommend Dr. Polatsch to anyone I meet that has suffered a similar injury. Thank you Dr. Polatsch for doing such a great job!
Dr. Polatsch removed my giant cell tumor of tendon in sheath from my finger. The surgery was a complete success. I felt normal within a day, within two weeks I was unbandaged, and a month later I am good as new. After being wrongly diagnosed by my primary care physician, I found Dr. Polatsch on the internet. He correctly diagnosed the lump in my finger. He and his staff were professional and knowledgeable, and Beth Israel did a good job with the surgery.I highly recommend Dr. Polatsch.
Dr. Polatsch performed Proximal row Carpectomy, Radial styloidectomy and Posterior interosseus nerve excision on my right writst, removing 3 of 9 bones. Surgery become the only option as the pain and discomfort increased and my strength decreased. The condition was caused by an untreated athletic injury many years previous. The hope was for 70% mobility and being able to play golf ago. The recovery was about 2-3 months. I was very consistent with my rehab. The results have been astouding and exceeded my hope. Wrist movement is 100%, strenght is 100%, up from 55% prior to surgery. My wrist is pain free and stron. I rate Dr. Polatsch and his office the highest rating possible (100%).
Dr. Polatsch is an excellent doctor. He is knowledgable, professional, and extremely helpful. Only four weeks after operating on my three broken fingers, I was able to completely open and close my hand. I am currently working on rebuilding my strength, but overall I am one hundred percent satisfied with the work Dr. Polastch has done. I consider myself fortunate to have him as my doctor. I highly recommend Dr. Polastch to anyone who is looking for a doctor they can trust. He won’t let you down.
I recently had surgery with Dr. Polatsch at Beth Israel Hospital. First, the experience with Dr. Polatsch was great. The office staff was pleasant and each time I arrived early for my appointment, they brought me back early.I did not wait more than an average of 5 minutes for my appointment. Dr. Polatsch was extremely professional, comforting, and clearly knowledgeable.Due to the nature of the injury,he remained in contact with me while I was going through follow-up procedures,e.g.MRI. As for Beth Israel hospital (were I had surgery),it was a great experience and pleasant surprise.Everyone that I interacted with me was nice and had a positive attitude. Polatsch.
Outstanding surgeon. I suffered a golf related injury where I tore my cartilage – TFCC. I did not heal with a splint and therapy. Dr. polatsch tried an injection as well. I had an arthroscopy and everything went really well. I barely had any pain after surgery. I was casted for a few weeks and no I can finally play golf without pain. He is a miracle worker. Great arthroscopic doctor.
Having fallen down a flight of stairs in India and shattering my elbow (fracture and displaced radial and ulnar heads), I was evacuated to the US and the tender mercies of Dr. Polatsch and his able staff. Following a 16 hr flight from Mumbai, what a relief to be told to come right in, to be immediately seen, and to have xrays, CT scan, presurgical exam, blood tests, and surgery all scheduled before I left the office. Dr. P. is a star: a brilliant, skilled and kind surgeon, much admired by his staff and by this patient (a retired pediatric nurse practitioner, CPMC ’74). Dr. P. discussed diagnosis, treatment (ORIF, radial head implant) and prognosis with me throughout my lengthy recovery. 5 months post-op, I am pain-free, have full range of motion and am independent in grooming, housework, gardening, exercise and volunteer work. I consider myself indeed fortunate. My results far exceed my expectations, thanks to the ministrations of Dr. Polatsch. We hit a home run!
Dr Polatsch was recommended to me by a physical therapist I called with whom I had no prior relationship. I almost did not go to see him after reading a couple of unhappy reviews on this site, and I went prepared for an argument. I was convinced by experience with a (same problem) De Quervain’s cyst on my other wrist that surgery was necessary and effective, but Dr. P. convinced me with unexpected patience that an injection had a good chance to remedy the problem. Even though I had pain, some clicking and a distinct “bump”, the single injection worked well. Over a period of days the discomfort was gone, and over the next few weeks improvement continued. Two months later, only a tiny bump remains and no symptoms. Dr P was a pleasant surprise and saved me hundreds of dollars in co-pays for surgery. I am 67 and have had many trigger finger surgeries, mostly successful (other doctors).
terrific surgeon. my carpal tunnel symptoms have disappeared. the recovery was very fast and with little pain or discomfort. the doctor also has a terrific bed side manner. anyone suffering from carpal tunnel need not. this doctor will alleviate your problem! this review is coming from a medical malpractice defense attorney so I know how to choose an excellent physician.
Dr. Polatsch is an excellent doctor who I highly recommend. After having my baby i had terrible pain and ended up having trigger fingers, carpel tunnel, and de quervains bilaterally. I had seen another hand surgeon first and then fortunately found Dr. Polatsch. He is incredibly patient, knowledgable, reassuring, understanding and just an all around great doctor. The thought of having surgery on my hand was scary enough but adding into the mix having an 8 month old at home just really made me nervous. I am now 7 weeks post op and have no more severe pain and am working to overcome some stiffness but overall I am doing very well. I highly recommend him and plan to have my other surgery done by him as well. you won’t be sorry with Daniel Polatsch as your doctor. Being in the pharmaceutical business i can honestly say that most surgeons bedside manner is quite poor. Dr. Polatsch is a real gem.
Dr. Polatsch repaired my left hand after it was stepped on and broken in a couple of different places. He operated the same week and I have full use of my hand again. I had previous surgery in my right hand after severing my ring and pinky fingers and he is treating me for pain and nerve problems with the old injury. He is WONDERFUL doctor!
I had a big problem with my forearm. Dr polatch diagnosed me right away and i felt no need for 2nd opinion. He performed a surgery in 10 minutes and i felt great ever since. I can’t thank him enoughvery strongly recommended
Dr. Polatch saved my hand. I had seen 10 other hand surgeons in new york and no one would would attempt to reconstruct my hand except for him. He is a genius. My hand is as good as new.

Nothing But The Best!
My Husband had basal joint surgery, along with carpal tunnel and trigger finger surgery. We couldn’t have asked for a more caring doctor. He’s an excellent surgeon, along with a great bedside manner. So nice to find both qualities in a doctor. He’s cautious too. He saw my husband the next day because he was complaining of pain. Dr. Beldner checked to make sure there was no infection and pin was in place, everything was going as it was suppose too. Thank you Dr. Beldne!!!!
Excellent Doctor, Highly Recommend
I highly recommend Dr. Beldner, he is a great doctor and surgeon. When I went to him for a broken wrist, he presented the options to me regarding surgical versus nonsurgical treatments and let me decide. I initially chose to forego surgery, and after I changed my mind due to scheduling concerns, he patiently explained to me what to expect. He is as kind and caring as he is skilled. My surgery was a success, and based on his advice my recovery has been fast. I have seen several physical therapists who have told me how good the alignment of my bones is, and one went so far as to tell me that he took his own daughter to Dr. Beldner, who was his first choice. Dr. Beldner inspires a lot of trust.
Dr Beldner did reconstructive surgery on my husbands hand. From the first day we met him until 5months later when he was released frm his care I have to say every visit with him was a pleasure First I want to say he is a top notch surgeon. Also his bedside manners are amazing. He is truly a gem in his field. I would highly recommend Dr. Beldner.
Dr Beldner saved my hand! He is so kind, smart and talented. He explained the most complex ideas in a way I could understand.
Highly Skilled and Genuine Communication
Dr. Beldner possesses the rare combination of a high skill set and the ability to communicate to his patients in a very easy and comfortable way.

Patient
I have scleroderma. My fingers on my left hand were becoming gangrenous. Dr. Beldner took me right away . My wait in the office was minimal. The doctor and his staff gave me so much attention that I felt very secure . The surgery was great! The follow up also great! I can only say the Doctor is a genius and my fingers look and work as if they are new! Sometimes you meet a doctor whose work is a gift to his patients. Dr. Beldner is one of those doctors.

Dr. Beldner was excellent in explaning what was and what was not possible regarding my elbow fracture. His surgical prowess was excellent abd I would recommend him highly.
Fantastic!
Over the course of my life, I’ve had stitches six times in my fingers and hands, two of which required surgery. About a month ago, I lopped a nice flap off my thumb while cutting a red onion; in retrospect, I should have had it stitched right then, though in the moment I thought it would heal on its own. Though I’d also sliced through the nail, the cut seemed to be improving, until one day, about six days later, I unwrapped it, and my thumb looked like it had grown a brain the size of a chick-pea. I had a granulation tissue spewing out of the crack, and also out one side of the thumb. It was hideous. I went to the ER; the doctor in the ER didn’t feel up to doing it herself; she referred me to a specialist at a plastic surgery place – Dr. Adam Shaffner; excellent doctor; he looked at it; he told me what he believed needed to be done (he was right; slightly different take than the ER doctor); when he came back into my room, it was 2:30 PM on a Friday. He had a print-out in his hand; he said the exact procedure wasn’t one he’d done in several years, so he was going to send me to – in his opinion – one of the best two or three hand surgeons in the city of NY. He’d gone ahead and phoned Dr. Steven Beldner, and Dr. Beldner agreed to stay late at the Beth Israel Hand Center and do the procedure right that afternoon. As for Dr. Shaffner’s opinion of Dr. Beldner, he couldn’t have been more correct. His staff was great. So was he. Fast. Efficient. And a perfect job. He had to remove part of the nail, cut out the granuloma, re-open my original cut, re-align, and put in several stitches. When the bandages first came off a week later, my jaw fell open. It looked like a thumb! And he’d done the surgery IN OFFICE, on the spot, and all it cost me was a $25 co-pay. If you need work done on a hand, make Beldner the one you see. I daresay it was the best doctoring experience of my life. (I’ve had knee scopes, a ruptured achilles tendon, all sorts of things over the years.) In the small drama of this thumb, Beldner was the deus ex machina. I’d give him as many stars as any rating site would allow me to give him.
Outstanding surgeon and team
Dr. Beldner performed surgery on one of my fingers a little over a month ago, and I found the surgery and all related care (before, during and after) to be outstanding. He has a Class A team, and they all did a fabulous job managing my care and my expectations. Everything was well explained to me so that I could also be a part of the process and know what to expect. I highly recommend Dr. Beldner and his entire team — they function like a well-oiled (caring) machine.
Exceptional Care
Dr. Steven Beldner gets my vote for the most exceptional physician that I have ever seen. His work is excellent, his bedside manner is comforting, and his personality is engaging.
Excellent Doctor!!!
Dr. Beldner surgically re-attched a torn ligament in my hand. He is extremely caring and has a truly amazing bedside manner. It’s true that sometimes you will wait to see him (in the waiting room) but it’s because he will always give priority to people who have an emergency or need an unscheduled or expected appointment after having had surgery. He explains things in a way that are easy to understand without making you feel stupid, and he makes a point to ask if he answered all your questions. I have had a terrific experience with him and highly recommend him.
Mom and nurse
Dr Beldner performed hand surgery on my daughter, a college athlete on full sports scholarship. He isamazing !! He worked with her to minimize a prolonged recovery period. She was back playing in 2 months time. The wait to see him at the office at times was long, however, when it was our turn he gave his undivided attetion. We were never rushed and never had difficulty getting an appointment to see him. He is very caring and has a wonderful bedside manner. He is well worth the wait. I highly recommend him and have given his name multiple times. Terrific surgeon with an equally terrific bedside manner. kind and courteous, cared about my concerns and fears and spent as much time with me as I needed pre and post op. thank you for caring and being a mensch.
Dr. Beldner is fantastic. He is extremely busy yet makes you feel like you are his only patient. He has a incredible bedside manner, he explains everything without making you feel stupid, and he comes across as a very decent and caring physician. He surgically reattached a torn ligament in my thumb. I highly recommend him without any hesitation!!
I really want to thank dr Beldner for attending to my condition with honesty and great professional ability. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Beldner was recommended to me by a friend who had broken her wrist, which is also what happened to me. I was initially upset when I was told by other staff members t his office that my x-rays looked like I would most likely need surgery. Dr. Beldner, however, was hesitant to operate and recommended observing me closely instead, only suggesting surgery if needed. He did say there was a good chance I’d need it but I appreciated him not forcing it upon me. So far I’m healing well and may have avoided surgery at all! I’ve never waited long for any of my appointments.
Performed hand surgery on my daughter,a college athlete on full sports scholarship.Worked with her to minimize prolonged recovery time. Was playing again in 2 mos. Office wait at times a bit long but we were given full attention and never rushed when it was our turn. He is well worth the wait. No difficulty getting an appointment.Very caring and wonderful bedside manner. I have highly recommend him to others and have completed a recommendation survey for my insurance company as well.Thank You Dr B.
Best hand surgeon ever…he saved my finger in half the time of another quoted hand surgeon (1 surgery instead of 2) He gets my celebrity endorsement all the way!
