Steven Beldner, M.D

Co-Director

Steven Beldner, M.D - The Newyork Hand & Wrist Center

Nationally and internationally renowned hand surgeon, Dr. Steven Beldner, is Co-Director and Co-Founder of the Hand and Wrist Surgery Center of Lenox Hill. He was recruited to build a world class hand and wrist center for NSLIJ after he succeeded in starting and building a similar program at Mt. Sinai/Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC where he has practiced for 20 years.

A fellow of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, he is board certified in Orthopedics and credentialed in Hand Surgery. Dr. Beldner was elected President of the New York Society of the Hand by his tristate peers and has served on its board. He has published and lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally, on problems related to the hand, wrist and elbow. His expertise is frequently sought by professional chefs, fashion designers, musicians, artists and athletic teams in the NHL, NBA and New York State Athletic Commission. Dr. Beldner uses his medical knowledge, combined with state of the art technology, to best restore original function. Some of his patients have gone on to win The World Series in baseball, Stanley Cup in hockey, NBA division championships, World Middle Weight Boxing Titles, Olympic Gold and Silver Medals and some have been inducted into the Halls of Fame of their respective professional sports.

His practice encompasses disorders from the elbow to the fingertips. He is a minimalist who believes that surgery should only be considered after all other options are exhausted.

He serves as an Editor for Orthopedics Magazine and his ideas have influenced protocols developed by the New York Athletic Commission to minimize hand injuries in professional boxing. His opinions have been sought out by National News Networks as well as by newspapers and other media.

Regularly nominated as a New York Times Super Doctor, Dr. Beldner has also received The Patient Choice and Most Compassionate Doctor awards from multiple organizations such as Health Grades and Castle Connolly. He appears on New York Magazine’s Top Doctors and U.S. News and World Report Lists for his expertise in hand surgery.

Dr. Beldner earned his medical degree from Rutgers Medical School in 1991 and was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and was also elected its president. His postgraduate training included a surgical internship at NYU Medical Center, followed by an Orthopedic Surgery residency and Hand Fellowship also at NYU. Upon graduation, he became an active NYU staff member. At Beth Israel/ Mt Sinai Medical Centers, he was an original founder of their hand fellowship and served as their director of education. For over a decade, he was responsible for training plastic surgery residents from Albert Einstein College of Medicine about managing problems of the hand and wrist.

An active member of the International Wrist Investigators Workshop, Dr. Beldner is part of a select group of physicians from around the globe who are invited to help develop and lead research of complicated wrist conditions and share their experiences. He is also involved with the Science of Variation Group. This too is a select group of physicians from across the nation that work closely with the physicians at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) to better understand cutting edge trends in hand, wrist and elbow surgery.
